He received his professional education in the Janis Rozentals Riga Art High School (1968 – 1974) and in the Painting Department of the Latvian Art Academy (1974 – 1980), His post-graduation studies were under Prof. Eduards Kalniņš in his Master Studio (1980 – 1983). As a recipient of a scholarship of the French government, he studied at the ”L’’Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Sorbonne Art Plastque” in Paris. (1987 – 1988). He became an associate professor at the Latvian Art Academy in 1992, followed by a full professorship in 1994. From 2007 to 2018 he was the Academy’s rector. He has been contributing to exhibitions since 1977 as well as staging his solo shows. His artworks can be found in the collections of the National Art Museum of Latvia and the Latvian Artists’ Union, in private collections in Latvia and abroad.
