Jānis Purcens

It Is Written

11.05.2011 - 11.06.2011

Painter’s Jānis Purcens’s (b. 1973) new exhibition is about the text, the thought, the written word. The way it emerges in his mind, resides there, evokes contemplation and changes — because nothing is permanent, the resonance created by word can be barely felt but increasingly becomes like a snow ball that starts the avalanche. Word, written word, many words like grains in an ear. The conjugation of letters becoming words, words becoming sentences and sentences that cover fields — this idea associates with a tapestry in which threads turn into a tight pattern. The process of weaving of a text on a canvas or a paper is a process of meditation for an artist. The text, mostly from the Gospel, becomes a road to himself, to the self-communion transformed through the labyrinth of artist’s thoughts. The road of searching. Essentially every piece of art is a road of self-communion unless it is brought about mercantile reasons or is a work of commission. This is not the case of Jānis Purcens who much like Verlaine in the end of XIX century requires to hold the word in a high respect. The exhibition It Is Written once again assures us about the magical power of a word. It can be visited and read in the gallery Daugava.
