The exhibition “Light Towers”, featuring recent works in porcelain by Pēteris Martinsons opened at the gallery “Daugava” on November 25 and runs through December 12. Because of the artist’s captivation with light, it is no wonder that his favoured medium is porcelain. Porcelain, with its fragile and delicate nature and its transparency accentuated by light, almost suggests a spiritual dimension that can remove us from the regular and mundane and transport us into a momentary dream world, one where reality no longer exists. Only a talented and inspired artist comfortable with the medium can produce works that are mysterious, inspiring and fascinating where the viewer is invited guess in which galaxy they exists. The Ceramics Studio in Kecskemet, Hungary is of particular significance to the career of Pēteris Martinsons. Since having been invited to work there for several decades now, a number of his works remain there although some have been brought to Latvia. His works may also be found in other locations, such as those produced in Finland where he stayed with a colleague; in Salacgriva, Latvia where he stayed with the ceramist Imants Klidzējs; and in Poland at the electro-porcelain factory “Argillon” In addition to his work in porcelain, the artist also produces drawings which in themselves are works of art. He claims they are done to maintain his artistic skills. He also feels a need to draw daily to keep “fit” in case a muse turns up. Besides, the drawings can be considered sketches for future work.
