Biruta Delle

My realism

17.01.2014 - 15.02.2014

Realism, a broad notion in art, is subject to individual interpretation. In the current exhibition of her work Biruta Delle clearly expresses her approach to realism. This explains the reason behind the “my” in the title of the exhibition. Her personality, feelings and emotions are reflected in her paintings of people and nature, foliage, the sky and the roofs of houses and even in her flower pieces and still lifes; the latter, though not much favoured by Delle have found their place in the exhibition. As many artists do, she has sought to answer the eternal questions on the world’s order and humanity’s place in the world and has been tackling them all her life through the medium of colour on canvas. Her skillful use of colour often evokes an emotional response in her viewers causing them to ponder over significance in her paintings. Biruta Delle’s realism integrates both the unreal and surreal, as well as irony and grotesque and when combined, results in that unique style that has attracted and fascinated viewers for about a half century. This exhibition has additional significance as January 17 is the artist’s birthday. Viewers have long questioned her about the secrets of her painting, to which she simply replied: just the right color in the right spot, and that’s all there is to it. But, is it really that simple? Without the artist’s talents, paintings do not breathe and whisper the sounds of smarting pain or of despair mixed with a hope. But hers do. After viewing paintings expressing her style of realism, we can only conclude that life can be beautiful but complicated.
