Dace Lielā
Outside
15.05.2013 - 21.06.2013
Dace Lielā’s previous solo exhibition “ Outside” in the gallery Daugava in 2009 induced us think of time, eternity, man and nature with their continual rhythms. The artist with her exceptional attitude toward painting is endowed with the ability to perceive and feel nature, and to depict it in her painting. She seems to be indifferent to being modern and up-to-date but does get carried away with painting as she sees it. In her exhibition in the gallery, vastness on an immense scale is seen as each painting in the two-dimensional plane vividly conveys a third dimension as well: depth. In the work “On the Beach” it is the infinite scope of unattainable horizons and the dark eddies of a river and in the work “March” it is the high blue sky. Professor Indulis Zariņš who once said that painting is an illusion, and he seems to be right and this is confirmed by the vastness perceived in Dace’s exhibition. The illusion of space parallels the illusion of light flowing from the painting “January”, so white and bright. The viewers are fascinated by her work and her high level of craftsmanship and skill is recognized by her colleagues. Natural phenomena such as melting snow, reflections in the water and nature’s awakening in March are depicted with great mastery and impeccable tonal relationships. This is clearly demonstrated in the painting “November” with its mood, mist, subtle light and bare tree branches with a random leaf and the autumn-like forest. All her depictions of nature radiate a personal attitude and presence. The lines from Leonids Ariņš’ diary must be mentioned that painting is a high art and only certain personalities are able to deal with it.
