The Place
03.09.2015 - 03.10.2015
The exhibition “The Place” by the artist KRISTĪNE MARKUS (1986) is being presented by the gallery Daugava, Alksnāja Str. 10/12, running from September 3 through October 3. The following summarizes the artist’s thoughts regarding the exhibition. A place encompasses both physical and abstract attributes of a space. It is something well defined but vague at the same time. It is visible and physically perceptible but also possesses something that provokes emotions and feelings.
And yet, they are stories about places and specific spaces. I wonder whether a place alters its aura with a change of space? Does the perception of a space change in different seasons, lightings and lay-outs? What predominates in the perception of the space– a man with his feelings or master of the space leaving traces in the environment as imprints and evidence for the others? People set themselves apart from everything by comparing and putting themselves first. Actually, space is primary and people are secondary as they have to occupy space somewhere.
People may impart meaning to the space but their lives are shaped by it. The space can characterize them because while arranging their surroundings, they create a story and their personalities are reflected in the space. A place is the portrayals of space and the depiction of feelings and changeability.
